Fordham Prep fell one game short of earning a berth in the intersectional playoffs last year when they lost Game 3 to Xaverian.

Coach Steve Pettis said this year's squad is built on three fundamentals: defense, pitching and baserunning.

All three should come in handy this season as city high school teams are forced to use wooden bats.

Senior second baseman Mickelangelo Santana hit .487 last year, but can he put up the same numbers with real lumber? That remains to be seen, but Pettis is banking on Santana, shortstop Dan Fiorido and catcher Jesus Jaile to provide solid defense up the middle.

"We got great defense, strong pitching and we stole six or seven bases," Pettis said. "Our team is based on these three things."

Fordham Prep should be in the mix in Bronx/Westchester 'A', while Cardinal Hayes and All Hallows may take baby steps toward contention in the
Bronx/Manhattan 'A' division.
